United Nations Lifts Sanctions on Syrian President Ahead of Presidential Visit
Security Council representatives approved to an American proposal to lift sanctions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria ahead of his presidential meeting next week.
He was appointed provisional head of state subsequent to commanding a rebel offensive that removed the previous leader in winter 2024, ending 13 years of internal conflict.
America's diplomat to the UN Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "an emphatic political statement" that recognised Syria was in "a fresh chapter" since Assad was deposed.
Previously, he faced global penalties while commanding the Muslim faction HTS, which was formerly linked to the terrorist network. Washington eliminated HTS from a list of global extremist entities during July.
Further Restrictions Lifted
The UN also removed penalties against the Syrian interior official the interior minister.
Syria's foreign minister expressed satisfaction with the elimination of these restrictions, posting on social media: "Syria expresses its appreciation to Washington and supportive states for assisting the country and its population."
Imminent Washington Talks
The Syrian leader's Washington trip this coming Monday occurs subsequent to President Trump said the Syrian leader had made "good progress" towards bringing peace to the previously divided state.
Both presidents held discussions initially during May, during Trump's Riyadh trip while traveling through the Middle East.
After that meeting, the US president described the Syrian as a "strong individual" possessing a "powerful background".
The HTS organization he led served as al-Qaeda's branch inside the country before he cut connections during 2016.
Previous US Visit
Monday's visit does not represent his initial visit to America in the current year. This past fall, he became the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to address the global assembly in Manhattan after approximately sixty years.
In his speech, he stated the country had been "reclaiming its rightful place among the nations of the world" while showing support toward Gaza's residents.
