Right-leaning responses to the limited release of documents involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others lamented how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration officials defended the heavily censored sections with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the redaction process.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt significant questions about what may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for greater openness.
“The public are raging and disengaging,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and implied that a subsequent legislature may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this document release egregiously does not adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Rally In Support of the Release
However, some conservative commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are entirely censored, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
But a few are not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled certain rightwing voices to launch the attack.
“It’s pretty rich how the Democrats wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been concealing those files for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy decades-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added.
Overall Conservative Comment Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, broader discourse on the right was comparatively subdued after the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for transparency that preceded the congressional vote to pass a bill mandating the documents' release.
Loomer, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy binders of files that contained little previously unseen data.
