Exploring a Unusual Steam Demo: Playing as a Poop on a Quest to Find the Toilet

Steam Next Fest is currently underway, and players have found plenty of engaging independent titles. But, one is particularly notable for its quirky concept. Titled Unko Technica, this retro-inspired platformer includes a hero that is truly a piece of poop trying to make its way to a restroom. As a fun fact, "Unko" is Japanese for "poop."

Player controls is simple: just use a jump control. In 150 levels, encounter boss fights and visit a shop to buy customizations for your dung hero.

Execute your movements precisely, since one error means restarting the level. Bounce on floating orbs to propel your character upward, cross disappearing surfaces, and touch switches to open new areas. Gather coins to purchase more difficult levels in which things intensifies.

Visually, the experience features eye-catching environments and an amazing background music. Its minimalist visual style with morphing basic polygons could recall gamers of classic titles like Earthbound.

Even though tough to recall other games where you are a dung character, video games frequently included scatological themes. For example, in Death Stranding, you can create throwables from protagonist droppings. Titles such as Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved utilize manure as soil enrichment. And of course, fecal references shows up a lot in Obsidian's South Park RPG The Stick of Truth.

Despite its goofy concept, Unko Technica has already earned impressive awards, including winning at Bandai Namco's game competition in 2023. This trial version is ready now on Steam, with the full game set to debut on PC this November.
